ChristmasDepot.com has its roots in Holiday Tree & Trim Co, incorporated in 1948. Prior to that, the Minchello family sold fresh fruits and vegetables. Every holiday season their store, the 22nd Street Market, would sell fresh wreaths and natural Christmas trees. Eventually the store started to offer ornaments and decorations. That portion of the business grew larger each year, until it became obvious
that there was a market for a store that would sell nothing but Christmas items all year. Thus, Holiday Tree & Trim Co was founded.
Holiday Tree & Trim Co began manufacturing artificial Christmas trees when Philip Minchello, the son of Joseph Minchello (who founded the 22nd Street Market that was the ancestor of Holiday Tree & Trim Co.), purchased an early artificial tree and was dissatisfied with it. Mr. Minchello took the tree apart and re-built it to his liking. Each year Mr. Minchello tinkered and experimented with his designs, offering them for sale at the 22nd Street Market. When Holiday Tree & Trim Co was founded, production of the improved artificial Christmas trees began in earnest.
Philip Minchello was always seeking to improve his product. Each year he would re-design his artificial trees, offering new models and retiring designs that he thought were outdated. Eventually, he settled on the basic, fully assembled design that his trees would become famous for. Rather than create trees that needed to be assembled each year, Mr. Minchello wanted to offer a tree that would be easy to set-up and take down. He devised a patented method for permanently attaching the branches to the trunk in such a way that the tree would last for years. Mr. Minchello always believed that American labor made a better product, and continued making his trees in Bayonne while the rest of the industry moved to China and Mexico. Holiday Tree & Trim Co. continues to make its premium-quality Christmas trees on the premises, and is one of the last producers of Christmas trees in America.
In the early 90's, just before the World Wide Web was opened to public use, Holiday Tree & Trim Co began a computer bulletin board, or BBS, dedicated to the line of collectible porcelain houses from Department 56. The bulletin board, called All About Christmas, proved to the company that it was possible to sell merchandise electronically. With the advent of the Web and slow demise of the BBS scene in America, Holiday moved All About Christmas onto the Internet. In 1994, the first Web version of All About Christmas went on-line. At first, the site incorporated games, contests, chat and other services for collectors of Department 56 items. Eventually, however, Holiday began widening the selection of products available for sale on All About Christmas to include a small amount of the other merchandise offered by the store. Eventually, the Web site offered
more general Christmas merchandise than Department 56 products. Holiday Tree & Trim decided to transform All About Christmas into a company Web Site for its entire line of products.
In 1997 All About Christmas was redesigned and renamed ChristmasDepot.com. Since that time the Internet sales portion of the business has steadily grown, transforming Holiday Tree & Trim from a business with a local clientele to an international provider of fine Christmas products.
Phillip Minchello passed away in the summer of 2000. His son, Mitch, has assumed leadership of the company. Both the brick-and-mortar store and website continue to be successful. Holiday Tree & Trim's artificial Christmas trees are in more demand than ever. The company has come a long way from Joseph Minchello's 22nd Street Market, and looks forward to continued success in the 21st century.
